About “CARBON”

The most compressed record in the catalogue, in both senses. Everything sits in the same narrow band, the vocal pushed hard against the instrumental rather than floated above it, almost no stereo width — deliberately claustrophobic, and deliberately two and a half minutes, because sustained tension has an expiry date past which discomfort stops registering. Heavy compression reads as tense, not powerful, so the arrangement exists to set up the one moment where everything opens. Mixed at low volume, no reverb on the lead vocal, master left short of maximum.
